icelandic currency exchange rate

the unit of iceland currency is krona (ISK). according to my travel book, the exchange rate in 2001 is 1 usd = 71 isk, now it is like 1 usd = 114 isk. therefore, it is much cheaper to arrange to icelandic trip this year.

reykjavik city tour

we went back from akureyri to reykjavik. we passed reykjavik twice but didnt have time for city tour. we did it at the end. at that moment, there was a big conference there, the hotels were very full.

landmark of the city is the church. the lake should be beautiful but under cloudy weather, i couldnt take a nice photo.

the good thing is i can see the rainbow near bus station.

grimsey island

this is the iceland's only arctic island. we went there by ferry. inside the fjord, it is very stable but when the ship sailed into the arctic ocean, the waves were very rough. some passengers did vomit.

this island is small but very beautiful. i can see the bird flying and pass through the arctic circle line to enter north pole. there is a hotel there. the shopkeeper is very kind. walking on the island is very comfortable. i enjoy it very much.

namafjall hverir

we moved on from the power plant to this region. it is known as the thinnest part on earth where u can really feel the geo-thermal under your feet. in some parts, i can see the boiling mud.

on the other side of the mountain, there is another blue lagoon which is similar to the one near reykjavik but much smaller in size.

krafla

this is on the top of the mountain where we can see the volcano lake and also the power station. this volcano lake is different from the lake we saw in golden circle as it is higher and colder so i cant find any mosquitos.

stakholstjorn

in this part of the myvatn tour, we saw many volcano related things, we saw the volcano itself, we saw the meeting point of europe and america continents similar to golden circle area. the rocks formed by volcanos are very beautiful.

godafoss

we joined the local tour in akureyri to myvatn region. godafoss is another great waterfall. i saw gullfoss in golden circle before so the feeling is not very exciting then. i cant remember, maybe this is the largest waterfall in iceland.

akureyri

we lived in a lovely guesthouse run by a old lady. remember the days when we shared the kitchen with a french family, the experiences were pleasant. again, there is nothing to see inside the town. we just used it as base to see the sightseeing spots nearby.

hofn to akureyri

after visiting the ice worlds around hofn, we left hofn on the next day for akureyri by bus. this is a long trip and we passed several small icelandic towns whose houses are very beautiful.

jokulsarlon glacier lagoon

this ice lake is very beautiful. it is the evidence of global warming. before that, there was no lake in this region. only glacier or ice could be found here before. after global warming, some ice parts melted and formed this lagoon. we took the boat trip inside it and saw a seal. that was my first time seeing seal outside ocean park.

vatnajokull

we joined the local tour in hofn and visited this glacier which is the largest one in europe. after climbing to the mountain, we tried the high speed motorbike on snow surface which was an exciting experience. there is a restaurant on the hill providing buffet lunch.

hofn

the town is very small. there is nothing to see inside. i just upload some hotel, tourist information centre and supermarket photos. we used it as base to visit the glacier nearby
